This year’s Tour, which ends in Paris on July 27, overlaps with the Commonwealth Games which begin in Glasgow on July 23.

Although it is only the track events which actually overlap with the Tour, and although Wiggins will be listed under ‘men’s road’ only, it is understood that the 34-year-old is preparing to enter the individual pursuit on the track if he fails to make Team Sky’s nine-man Tour team, which he fully expects to happen.

Team Sky insist that no decision has yet been taken, but the 2012 Tour champion broke cover last week by revealing that he had spoken with Sir Dave Brailsford, the Team Sky principal, and had been left with the impression that he would not ride this year unless Chris Froome injured himself in the build-up.

Wiggins, who described himself as “gutted”, has been training on the track recently having missed Team Sky’s altitude training camp on Tenerife last month and the team’s reconnaissance rides of the Tour route.
