(Skip to 3:21 for the start of the challenge)

The Beer Mile. Like the Triple Vodka Jump and the Hoptathlon, it’s one of the toughest events in all of drink athletics. Contestants must run four laps of a 1/4 mile running track, chugging a beer before each lap.

It’s not for the faint of heart.

Yet in this clip, James Nielsen runs the mile in under five minutes – downing four cans of Budweiser en route and smashing Australian Josh Harris’ previous record of 5:04.9.

Nielsen, who says he consulted some of the “best chemical minds on the planet” in preparation for the event, appears to struggle at the end of the third lap, but ales well that ends well, as he crosses the finish line with three seconds to spare.
