Captiva Island

This looks like a strong contender for ‘world’s most scenic triathlon’: the tiny sub-tropical island of Captiva off Florida’s Gulf Coast will host a short-distance race this September, combining spectacular natural beauty with the chance for a celebratory post-finish pint at its very own beachfront English pub.

Captiva is just 8km long and less than 1km wide and operates strict laws against overdevelopment, with no buildings higher than the tallest palm tree. It also has an abundance of wildlife and laidback island atmosphere, say the organisers.

The race will be held on 14th September and starts with a 400m swim around the northern tip of the island, followed by a 16km bike along Captiva’s coastal roads and a finishing with a 5km run. Participants will then be able to recover with a post-race drink at beachfront English pub The Mucky Duck, which promises cold beer and fresh seafood.

Entries cost £45 for individual entry and registration will open on 1st May, more details here: www.captivatri.org
