On Sunday April 6 a large and talented field of pro and age-group triathletes took part in Ironman South Africa 2014 at Nelson Mandela Bay.

It was the tenth anniversary of the race and for the first time the race sold out and is an indication of how popular the race has become.

Faris Al-Sultan of Germany is always up near the front in the 180k mile bike portion of any Ironman and went into the race as one of the favorites to content for a podium spot for the pro men.

Nils Frommhold was also expected to make a strong showing, but both would have to get past 2013 champion Ronnie Schildknecht of Switzerland who was back to defend his title.

The race for top spot among the pro women was extremely interesting as the three podium finishers from Ironman South Africa 2013 were all back.

In 2013 the order of finish was Jessie Donavan, Jodie Swallow, and Lucie Reed.

As the race got under way it was Nils Frommhold taking a small lead onto the bike course and he extended his lead in the bike and onto the run course.

At the 28k mark of the 42k marathon he had a lead of over five minutes on Faris Al-Sultan who had moved passed Kyle Buckingham and moved into second.

Al-Sultan was unable to catch the leader and Nils Frommold crosses the finish line first and is the Iroman South Africa Champion for 2014.

It was a great effort by South African Kyle Buckingham as he overtook Al-Sultan late in the race to claim second place.

Faris Al-Sultan rounded out the podium.

In the race for top spot among the pro women it was Jody Swallow of the UK leading throughout the swim and bike and she carrying that lead into the second of three 14k loops.

Lucy Gossage was running strongly behind her and appeared to be the main threat to Swallow in the fight for the top of the podium.

The race was still in progress at press time.

The pro triathletes were racing for prize money and Kona Ranking Points and there were 50 Ironman Triathlon World Championship qualifying spots available for the top age-group athletes.
