Milan-San Remo: The Round-Up

The Breakaway

The first classic of the year ended as many expected, with a bunch sprint. What most people did not expect is that outsider Alexander Kristoff would produce a brilliant sprint to leave the favourites for the race in his dust.

The Breakaway

As is the custom with pretty much any cycling race a breakaway is compulsory. This one started fairly early in the race and managed to stay away for a pretty large portion of the route. The men who held out the longest in the break were Marc de Maar, notable for training all winter by looping the 45km of road on the tiny Caribbean island of Curacao which only has 45km of road   and Maarten Tjallingii, who has a podium finish at Paris-Roubaix to his name. Interestingly Marc de Maar’s neighbour Nathan Haas was also part of the split until he punctured with around 90km to go.
