Quebec police ID man who died scuba diving under ice

OTTAWA – A 53-year-old Gatineau, Que., man who died at a quarry north of the city on Sunday was an inexperienced scuba diver who police believe panicked and likely ran out of air.

MRC Des Collines de L’Outaouais police identified the deceased as Marco Laplante.

Laplante was among friends and fellow divers at the Morrison Quarry in Chelsea, Que.

Laplante obtained his general certification less than a year ago and Sunday was his first dive under the ice this year.

Police suspect Laplante ran out of oxygen and panicked.

An instructor who was with the group made an emergency dive and quickly found Laplante.

Despite several resuscitation attempts, he was pronounced dead at hospital.

Police say an autopsy will be performed this week in Montreal. Investigators will also examine Laplante’s diving equipment.
