About 400 competitors competed in the Killarney Adventure Race – part of the St Patrick’s weekend racing festival – on Sunday morning.

Competitors left the town, cycling through the most scenic ancient paths of Killarney National Park; through the Famous Black Valley, where they ran a section of The Kerry Way; along Cummenduff Glen; and up onto MacGillycuddy’s Reeks to Curraghmore Lake.

They then turned back to complete the trail run transition at Casey’s Farm, before a final bike ride to the Eagle’s Nest, where the adventurers kayaked the Long Range River before heading back to the finish line at the Gleneagle Hotel.

A 52k challenge of strength and great fun.

It was Kerry’s own Jerry O’Sullivan who powered through to win the race in an incredible time of 2:44.45.

Not to be outdone, two minutes behind elite athlete Jerry was Kevin Murphy in an incredible time of 2:46.30, and he was followed in third place by Aidan O’Gorman, on 2:47.56.

First woman home was Siobhan Dineen in a time of 3:12.52. She was followed by Claire O’Donovan (3:13.40) and Helen O’Leary (3:13.44)

Race organiser Oliver Kirwan, from Elite Event Management, said: “Without the support of the residents in the Black Valley, Killarney National Park, the Gleneagle Hotel and all the team the event would not be such a success.

“The atmosphere, and perfect weather conditions for the athletes and hard-working organisers added to the great success of the day. I’m really looking forward to another great day of adventure on October 4.”
