Nicolas Roche’s Tinkoff-Saxo team leader Alberto Contador took back-to-back stage wins in the Tirreno-Adriatico, with a dominant victory on the mountain stage to Guardiagrele putting him into the race leader’s blue jersey with two days remaining.

Roche and his team-mates were to the fore, setting a blistering pace to the foot of the penultimate climb.

It was here, with about 40km left, that Contador launched his initial attack. With the remainder of the pre-race favourites falling by the wayside on the ultra-steep final climb, Contador now leads the week-long race by more than two minutes.

Roche, Dan Martin and Sam Bennett all lost time on the final climb but sprinter Bennett will be relishing a return to flatter terrain tomorrow.

At home, Ryan Sherlock returned from racing in Belgium to take victory at the Boyne Grand Prix in Slane, the national mountain bike champion, outsprinting Greg Swinand of UCD after the two had been out front for almost the entire 95km race.

Michael O’Loughlin (16), of the Nicolas Roche Performance Team, took the Blarney & District Trader’s cup, beating his father and former national veterans champion Martin to the line, with Brendan Cassidy third.
