Welsh world triathlon champions Non Stanford and Helen Jenkins have been confirmed in the opening round of the ITU World Triathlon Series in Auckland next month.

Stanford will begin the defence of her title in New Zealand while Jenkins, who was the world champion in 2008 and 2011, will compete in her first major ITU world series race since finishing fifth place at the Olympics at London 2012.

Jenkins has been sidelined with back and knee injuries since and missed the whole of 2013.

The Auckland event which will be held on April 5/6 has attracted a stunning field of the best triathletes in the world with an incredible 18 of the world’s top 20 women and 17 of the world’s top men.

The Welsh duo will be joined by fellow Great Britain star Jodie Stimpson, German Anne Haug, American Gwen Jorgensen and home heroine Andrea Hewitt as nine of the top 10 women in the world to commit their names to Auckland.

The men’s start list resembles a World Championship Grand Final or Olympic Games, with the likes of Javier Gomez and Jonathan and Alistair Brownlee all in attendance.

Jenkins and Stanford are expected to be named in the Welsh squad for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer where they could be joined by another world champion Leanda Cave.

The 35-year-old, who won Commonwealth Games silver in 2002 at Manchester and was crowned world champion in the same year, has moved up to the Ironman discipline where she became the world’s best in 2012.

But Cave has expressed her desire to drop down to the triathlon discipline for the first half of this year and complete a Welsh triathlon dream team in Glasgow.

Cave will compete in three triathlons over the next few weeks to prove her form and fitness to the Welsh selectors.

She will compete in the La Paz Continental Cup in Mexico on March 22, followed by the Valparaiso Continental Cup in Chile eight days later before the South Beach Triathlon in Miami on April 6.
