Atlanta resident David Russell said he’s looking to move to Chattanooga, in part because of the recreational opportunities such as mountain biking.

And he’s been coming to Chattanooga to ride for about 10 years, he said. He visits every month or so. He said the article accurately described the trails.

“The geography and geology make the region a trail builder’s dream,” he also said via email. “There’s something for every skill level, and they’re all within a short drive, meaning you can ride several different trails in one day. A lot if credit belongs with the local [Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association] chapter and the local land trusts and conservancies.”

Here’s what Jeff Barber wrote for the publication about the Scenic City:

If you’re looking for a city with a small-town feel plus trails to shred and a decent nightlife, Chattanooga is a great place to call home. In fact, with a cost of living that’s below the U.S. average, being a professional dirtbag mountain biker isn’t out of the question in Chattanooga!

OK, enough about the town—this list is about mountain bike trails, after all. SORBA Chattanooga set a goal for themselves several years ago to have 100 miles of singletrack within 10 miles of town by 2010. Well, it’s 2014, and by our count, there are 101 miles of singletrack within 15 miles of the town center—mission accomplished! Raccoon Mountain is perhaps the best-known trail system in the area, thanks to its mix of flowy singletrack and technical descents. At Five Points and Enterprise South, you can get your berm on, while the ridge trails at White Oak Mountain can be as rocky as you like.

Recently, a situation in which a cyclist who was harassed on Raccoon Mountain drew attention and shook the cycling community. Click here and here to read more about that.

Last summer, Chattanooga hosted the USA Pro Cycling Championships, which gave downtown businesses a boost and drew thousands to the area.
