World Triathlon Corp. will stage its first half-Ironman distance race in New Jersey next September, two years after canceling the New York City Ironman after one edition because of logistical problems.

The 70.3-mile (113-kilometer) race — the first Ironman-branded triathlon held entirely in the U.S.’s most densely populated state — will be held at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, New Jersey, on Sept. 21, according to World Triathlon Corp., the owner of Ironman.

The event will take place two years after Providence Equity Partners Inc.’s World Triathlon scrapped plans to continue with its 140.6-mile New York City Ironman because of transportation issues and a backlash over a $1,200 registration fee.

“There’s a huge tri community in the New York tri-state area,” said Ken Rideout, a 42-year-old Katonah, New York, resident and director of credit sales at New York’s Credit Agricole (ACA)who competed in the New York Ironman and the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii in October. “Any time I can drive to a race and stay in my own bed, that race would definitely be at the top of my list.”

The event, known as Ironman 70.3 Princeton, will be directed by Glassboro, New Jersey-based CGI Racing Inc., which stages three other triathlons in the state. The general entry fee will be $275, with registration beginning Dec. 16, organizers said.

Jersey Course

The 1.2-mile swim portion will cover a one-loop course in Mercer County Park’s 365-acre lake, site of the New Jersey State Triathlon each July.

The 56-mile bike ride will follow a single-loop course from Mercer County Park and wind through rural sections of Monmouth County before returning to the park.

The 13.1-mile run portion will feature 2 1/2 loops on jogging paths at the park and nearby Mercer County College.

In September 2011 and 2012, World Triathlon staged a half-Ironman race in Stroudsburg,Pennsylvania. The race was canceled after two years because of weather and logistic issues, and was replaced by a similar race hosted by Manassas, Virginia-based Revolution3 Triathlon.

The 2012 New York Ironman, which sold out 2,500 entries in 11 minutes, featured a 2.4-mile swim in the Hudson River, a 112-mile bike ride on New Jersey’s Palisades Interstate Parkway and a 26.2-mile run that ended in Manhattan.
