SURF star Shannon Eckstein has revealed he will race in pain after suffering a million-to-one injury which almost forced him out of this weekend’s Nutri-Grain ironman series.

The multiple series champion admitted he considered pulling out of the six-round event, which begins in Western Australia on Saturday, after suffering internal bleeding as the result of a torn diaphragm.

Eckstein believes he suffered the injury in training and admits if it flares again it may require surgery.

“A couple of the specialists said it is a little weird and fairly rare,” said Eckstein, who underwent blood and urine tests along with an X-ray and CT scan before it was diagnosed.

“I was training one day and just got this intense, strong pain.

“It turned out a 5cm haematoma had formed and was bleeding into my liver.

“Two weeks ago I was considering pulling out of the series.”

A nervous Eckstein put himself through his paces at a recent Queensland carnival to test his body after the injury.

“It’s given me confidence that I can get through it at least,” he said of back-to-back rounds of the Nutri-Grain series this weekend.

“I still have a fair bit of pain near the diaphragm and some referral pain in my right shoulder. It’s a little dull, a little numb in the shoulder.

“I am expecting to race in pain because I can’t take anything usual for it because it could provoke the bleeding again.”

Eckstein headlines a men’s field which this week lost one of the sport’s brightest stars in Coolangatta Gold winner Ali Day.

Day is suffering from a mystery illness which has left him unable to train and will undergo tests to his liver in Sydney next week.

The women’s field will be headed by defending ironwoman champion Courtney Hancock.
